How to choose a style of bike?

I am currently looking for a Schwinn bicycle recumbant cabotage or style. I have to find a bicycle suits my purpose. My plan is to ride over long distances (speed is optional), so I need a bike that is comfortable and within a price range about $ 700 or $ 800. Any suggestions would be helpful. I think what I'm trying to do is I need a bike to replace my car (commute to work, the school, etc). Any suggestions?
